How many people do you know that have fasted for 12 days, allowing a live audience to watch them sleep, sit and use the bathroom? Or even further, one that locked theirself inside a cage with their only way out being a ladder made of knives for steps? Well now you know one. Marina Abramovic.
Abramovic is a Serbia born, NY based artist who has pushed the envelope for years in the name of artistic expression. In 2010 from May to March, Abramovic performed an exhibit called “The Artist is Present” where she sat silent for 736 hours in the Museum of Modern Art’s atrium. Spectators were encourages to sit across from her in the museum and while she stared them down for thirty minutes. The result was a blog titled “Marina Abramovic made me cry,” and a support group of facebook titled “Sitting with Marina.”
Abramovic who will be sharing her 5 story Tribeca home with close friend and Gvenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, recently sat down with Harpers Bazaar and talking about designing her home. ”I don’t understand these enormous American kitchens that take up half the living room and then they just order pizza,” says Abramovic.
